A Lesson on Transparency in Government at the Reichstag

The Reichstag:

The Reichstag was burned down during World War I. There are several stories as to who was behind the fire. But that has long passed so let’s move forward. Today, it is rebuilt with a new glass coppola symbolizing transparency of government between those who serve in public positions and the people of Germany. Inside the Reichstag, you walk around a spiraling staircase upward into the copploa while looking downward into the chambers where the government officials meet daily to vote on the issues of the day for its citizens. The only separation is the glass.

Also, I have heard some call the glass coppola a washing machine. I think somebody is simply envious! Germany has miraculously transformed Berlin while bringing together the East and West. Also, inside the Reichstag, you will note there are metallic shaped paddle like fans rotating inside the coppola. they serve to collect energy from the sun and provide power used inside the Reichstag year round. This is simply genius!

The top of the coppola is open to the elements outside and that means when it rains; well … the rain comes in and for that matter , the same is true for the snow and ice and so on…..there is an internal drain system to catch and manage the water.

If you are visiting Berlin, you must have an appointment to visit the Reichstag . It is best to order your tickets and time slots for your visit to the Reichstag at least six weeks in advance. Also, remember that you will need to bring you passport with you for entry. For purposes of picture taking; appointments first in the morning are best and Saturday is the best day of the week!

Enjoy! This is a must see while in Berlin! If you enjoy studying architecture and design; you will want to add this to your bucket list.
