The Eleventh Hour

Copy of DSCN257Was it an episode of Anthony Bourdain  that inspired us to land up on the doorstep of Zur letzten Instanz ( the-eleventh-hour)when we planned our vacation to Berlin?“…. Anyways we made our reservations to dine where Napoleon once sat which was alongside the tile stove. And what a treat this experience was!!!! Some of the other famous guest to this At Eleventh Hour include the  likes of Charlie Chaplin , Angela Merkel, the current Prime Minister has dined here, and well there was Mikhail Gorbachev who sipped a beer here in 1989, and then there was Gerhard Schroder who treated the French president Jacques Chirac to a meal here in 2003, oh yes even Beethoven has been by for a beer.. …and many others …

Anyhow, this restaurant establishment has its own place in history as the oldest restaurant in Berlin dating back to 1621 when a former equestrian servant of the elector opened a gin mill at this location called the “Biedermeirstrubchen”.. It is nestled in between forgotten medieval streets from a forgotten past. Around 1924; Berlin established a national courthouse in Littenstrabe which is around the corner from the restaurant. It was reopened with its new name, Zur Letzen Instanz. It quickly earned a reputation as the Last stop for prisoners to enjoy a last chug of beer before going off to jail to serve out their sentence. After World War II; the building had been restored to its original condition and in 1963 was reopened.
